“Deepening our understanding of the person”

In this joint presentation we will consider how person-centred and experiential therapy can enable us – and our clients – to become “more” of who we are. We will consider our challenges as human beings who are not only part of a greater humanity but also part of the vast interconnectedness of life on earth. We know from personal experience and from client work how individuals limit themselves by having a negative view of who they are and what they may become. Yet we also know that it is possible to access a deeper flow of experiencing, beyond thought, beyond feelings and beyond limiting self-beliefs. Accessing this level of experiencing can bring us to a direct knowing of our own spiritual dimension as part of what Rogers terms “the formative tendency” of the universe. We will consider how Gendlin’s influence on Rogers and his colleagues in the 1950s and early 60s led to a “process” view of the person that has significantly enriched the theory and practice of our particular therapeutic orientation. We will also consider the physical dimension of the person and how it is foundational to a deepening awareness of ourselves.

*Judy Moore (United Kingdom) is former Director both of the Centre for Counseling Studies and of theUniversity Counseling Service at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. She was theChair of the Organizing Committee for PCE2008 and has also been involved in theorganization of several small conferences at UEA. She retains an affiliation with UEA and remains actively involved with the PCA as well as being a Certifying Coordinator of the Focusing Institute, New York.

**Jean-Marc Randin (Switzerland) is a psychologist, client-centered psychotherapist, and trainer in Lausanne. He has been in private practice since 1994, and used to teach PCA in several high schools for social workers. From 1999 to 2001, he directed the French translation of The Carl Rogers Reader, published in 2001 under the title L’approche centrée sur la personne. He was a board member of the WAPCEPC from 2006 to 2012, is co-founder and Managing Editor of the journal ACP Pratique et recherche, a member of pca.acp, and co-founder of the Swiss institute IFAACP.

This panel will start with Eva Sollárovà, who will show what PCE can offer for building and managing effective work relationships as a means to achieving good results, for being effective in a difficult, crisis, or even hostile environment, and for being able and courageous enough to make decisions according to one’ s integrity and aims. The author will include examples from her own experience in different leading positions and roles.

Next, Columbus Salvesen will present the Norwegian model for protection of children – a seemingly quite adequate institution for its task, even to be proud of. Then he will reveal its flaws, which are more than dramatic, and unexpected in a social democratic country with a rich state. He will argue – or hopefully make it self-evident – the need of PCA for system correction.

Finally, Margaret Hannah will describe the crisis facing modern healthcare systems as they struggle to adapt to changing demographics, finances and patterns of disease. She will introduce thinking from International Futures Forum which tries “to make a difference in the face of all that gets in the way of making a difference”. Drawing inspiration from humanistic understandings of health and disease she will give examples of her work in action.

*Margaret Hannah (United Kingdom)  studied medicine at Cambridge University and St Thomas’ Hospital, London.  She practised hospital medicine in London and Hong Kong where she became interested in public health.  In 1996, she was appointed Consultant in Public Health Medicine for NHS Fife, Scotland and became Director of Public Health in the same organisation in 2015.
Margaret has pioneered fresh thinking in public health and the culture of healthcare. This work resulted in a book in 2014, called Humanising Healthcare: Patterns of Hope for a System under Strain published by Triarchy Press.  She was part of a team based at Glasgow University which studied the links between culture and wellbeing for five years.  The papers published about the work are all available at and a book entitled The Future Public Health based on the work was published in 2012 by Open University Press.

**Columbus Salvesen (Norway) is a Clinical Psychologist who has “transferred “ his activity from the Therapy Room into Organisation and Working-Life, focusing on initiating learning processes which strengthen participation and communication and thus lead to transparency and Person-Centred Attitudes, Communication and Skills. He has had assignments for Companies, Organisations and The Civil Services World Wide focusing on The Human Factor. In this work he never stops wondering why the attitudes and skills therapists use in the therapy room, a simple and most powerful approach, are so little understood or taken into account in Working Life. Knowing the simple interventions which would make a whole world of difference for the parties involved, the lack of communicative abilities of the key persons is stunning and at times tragic to observe.

***Eva Sollárová, PhD. (Slovakia) is a Professor of Psychology and former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health Care at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia. She graduated with trainings in client-centred psychotherapy and PCA applications for organizations. For the past two decades, she has been intensively engaged with establishing the PCA within university study programs for helping professionals as well as lifelong education and trainings of helping professionals and managers on national level within the Ministry of Work and the Ministry of Education. She has published books, research articles, and book chapters on applications of the PCA beyond therapy, the PCA coaching model, the effects of trainings facilitating PCA competence for various professional roles, and facilitating the psychological integration in persons.
